Core Embedded Platform for a Rugged Telematics Display

Device Solutions designed and delivered the core embedded hardware and operating system for a rugged telematics display platform deployed across multiple industries.

Problem

A US-based technology company needed a rugged embedded platform to power a new telematics display product targeting agriculture, construction, mining, energy and marine applications. The product required a 10.1" capacitive touchscreen, multiple CAN interfaces, cellular connectivity, GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth, all in an IP65-rated package capable of operating from -30 to +85 ˚C.

The customer had strong expertise in application software and industrial enclosure design, but needed a hardware partner who could deliver the core embedded electronics and a production-grade Linux operating system. The platform needed to support multiple product variants across different industries without hardware redesign.

Solution

Device Solutions designed the carrier board and core electronics around a Toradex System-on-Module, integrating:

  • 10.1" capacitive multi-touch display interface (1280 x 800)
  • Dual CAN / CAN-FD interfaces for vehicle and equipment integration
  • LTE cellular with global carrier support
  • GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou positioning
  • WiFi and Bluetooth 5.0
  • Wide-range 12/24V DC input with reverse polarity and transient protection

The operating system was built on Toradex Torizon, providing a container-based Linux platform that cleanly separates the customer's application software from the underlying system. This allows the customer to develop and update their application independently, while Device Solutions maintains the OS and platform layer.

Outcome

The platform has been adopted by the customer for their commercial product line, serving customers across multiple industries. The hardware design has remained stable through several cycles of application software development, validating the approach of building a flexible platform that evolves through software rather than hardware changes.

By taking ownership of the hardware and OS, Device Solutions allowed the customer to focus their resources on application development and market-specific features, reducing their time to market and removing embedded hardware risk from their product roadmap.

Conclusion

This project demonstrates Device Solutions' ability to deliver the embedded foundation that product companies build on. Not every customer needs a complete turnkey system. For companies with their own application development capability, we provide the hardware platform, operating system and through-life support that lets them focus on what they do best.
